Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,
One of my most cherished childhood memories is of my mom styling my long hair into creative masterpieces and having everyone at school ohhh and ahhh over her works of art. My mom dreamed of being a hairstylist and would have been one of the best. When I decided to go to cosmetology school, she was so excited and made plans, at age 42, to attend with me. For reasons I can’t remember, she again postponed the dream but couldn’t wait to hear my stories and cheer me on every day. She was so proud of my successes throughout the years, especially when my dream came true and I was hired to work in the video and show department of John Paul Mitchell Systems. Every day, she wondered what city or country I was in and whether I was working too hard. Sometimes weeks went by when I didn’t call, but I knew she understood how busy I was.
My mom blessed my husband and me with her company when pulmonary fibrosis, which affected her breathing, took away her ability to live alone. All of a sudden, every day was Mother’s Day. I surprised even myself when I took off six weeks to hang out with my mom while she was still mobile. We went to every mall, craft fair, and farmer’s market within 20 miles of home. We’d play two or three games of Scrabble a day, listen to the blues (her choice), and eat chips and chocolate until we couldn’t eat another bite. I still cut and styled her hair, and she always reminded me of what a great hairstylist she would have been. Those weeks will be the most cherished memories of my life. My mom passed away on March 23, and this was my first Mother’s Day without her.
My wish to all of you is that you thank your parents for the dreams they postponed and the hours they spent wondering about your health and well-being. Most of all, I hope you’ll create cherished memories with every precious moment you have.

Lunatic Fringe Opens Orlando Salon
Staffed completely with Paul Mitchell School graduates, the new Lunatic Fringe Salon in Orlando, Florida, recently opened its doors. With four locations in Salt Lake City, Utah, and one in Boise, Idaho, the Orlando salon brings the growing company’s total to six, with additional nationwide locations planned for the coming year.
In an environment that completely mirrors the Paul Mitchell Schools’ culture and career path, Lunatic Fringe Salons provide Paul Mitchell graduates with an exciting career choice: a culture of growth that gives artistic, creative professionals a viable opportunity to build a legitimate career within a team culture. Like Paul Mitchell Schools, Lunatic Fringe Salons are committed to “going green,” giving back by raising money and awareness for charities, and supporting the BE NICE culture.
One week before the Orlando salon opened, owner Giulio Veglio presented the team with their first chance to give back as a group: doing hair and makeup for the Children’s Miracle Network Celebration 2009, a production to be aired on national TV. Each team member had the opportunity to work with celebrity champions such as actor John Schneider, Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton, Miss America 2009 Katie Stam, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, and Dancing with the Stars’ Julianne Hough, as well as with the champion kidsremarkable children who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges. “At the end of the week, we came back as a team and a family, not as twelve individuals, to open Lunatic Fringe Orlando,” said team member Marla Harmon.

School Owners Lead the Way
Our school owners are learning, growing, and setting brilliant examples for our Future Professionals!
Alee Cao, owner of the Cao Institute A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Alhambra, California, was a panelist at the Vietnamese American Summit leadership conference in Beverly Hills, California, on May 22. The conference is part of the Vietnamese American National Gala (VANG), a national biennial celebration of Vietnamese heritage and pride. Alee and the Cao Institute Design Team also worked backstage, styling hair for Miss World 20082009. “I feel honored and humble to be invited to share my story with business leaders and the new generation of Vietnamese Americans,” Alee said. “It was a great event for me to network and listen to the wisdom of amazing leaders such as the true humanitarian and former president Jimmy Carter, Louisiana Congressman Joseph Cao, and Beverly Hills Mayor Nancy Krasne. I was ecstatic when people asked me questions, commented on how much I inspire them, or booked me to speak at their universities. I always hoped that my story could guide people and I’m glad it did.”

NeCole Cumberlander, owner of two Ohio Academy Paul Mitchell Partner Schools in Twinsburg and Columbus, Ohio, won the Tri-Aerobicthon Boot Camp competition at her local gym. The event was designed to promote health and wellness in people of all ages. NeCole beat 16 competitors to earn the $1,500 prize, a monster-sized trophy, and bragging rights for the next year. “It was awesome to show everyone at the gym that a 42-year-old woman can beat a group of 20-something men in a physical contest,” she said.

Shawn Trujillo, co-owner of Paul Mitchell The School Salt Lake City and the Lunatic Fringe Salon chain, is continuing his education with Harvard Business School’s Owner-President Management course. Designed specifically for entrepreneurs, the program focuses on finance, control, strategy, leadership, marketing, negotiations, and macroeconomics. “It has always been a goal of mine to get an Ivy League education, but I never had the resources,” Shawn said. “Having Winn, John Paul, and the school opportunity has helped me realize this goal much sooner. It’s an absolute dream to accomplish something like this. I hope to bring back the knowledge and education to help take my businesses to the next level.”

SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS
Three New Schools Open
Paul Mitchell School Cofounders John Paul DeJoria and Winn Claybaugh have personally attended every school’s grand opening, and the three latest were no exception to the rule. Their first stop on the April 2009 tour was the Vision A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Ambler, Pennsylvania, where they were greeted by school owner Truc Do. Next was Rudy and Kelly A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where they were met in a limo by the three Core Future Professionals who raised the most money for the 2009 Magic of Memories charitable campaign. Then it was on to Kansas for the grand opening of the new Paul Mitchell School in Wichita.
“As exciting as it is to be on John Paul’s private jet, spend personal time with the school owners who join us as guests, and have hundreds if not thousands of people show up at each school, our grand opening tours take me back to why I entered the beauty industry 25 years ago and why I’m just as passionate today,” Winn said. “It’s because I get to hang out with Future Professionals. To walk into these schools and see the hope in their eyes and feel the passion in their conversations is why John Paul, Angus Mitchell, and I became partners in the school business. Here’s to many more years of building schools and being inspired by the thousands of Future Professionals who come through our doors!”

Animal Lovers Unite!
After a successful test in four Paul Mitchell Schools, the new John Paul Pet Club was launched to the entire network in April 2009. Designed as an organization for animal lovers, these student-run clubs:
- Cut hair and organize other FUNraising events to benefit and build awareness for local animal shelters, rescues, and/or charities (such as the pet fashion shows held by several schools as part of their Magic of Memories FUNraising campaigns)
- Collaborate with the Design Team to volunteer at local animal-related shows and charity events to promote John Paul Pet and Paul Mitchell Schools
- Educate school staff, Future Professionals, and guests about the history and animal-related philanthropy of John Paul DeJoria and John Paul Mitchell Systems, as well as the benefits of John Paul Pet products
- Work with the Take Home Team on inventory, ordering, and branding of John Paul Pet products within the school
Several schools have already started their clubs and held charity pet fashion shows, doggy washes, and dog walk-a-thons and participated in SPCA and Humane Society-sponsored events as part of their outreach within the animal community.
Any school that carries the John Paul Pet product line can form a John Paul Pet Club, and everyone is welcome to join. All you need is a group of animal lovers and a staff member to serve as team leader.
To launch a John Paul Pet Club at your school or for more information, contact Shawn Claybaugh at shawnc@jppet.com or (949) 633-5119.

Paul Mitchell Schools Saddle Up for a Cause
For the sixth straight year, Paul Mitchell Schools proudly joined the 2,000 riders representing 41 states and 14 countries for the 7-day, 545-mile AIDS/LifeCycle ride. Braving steep descents and a torrential downpour, Team Paul Mitchell boldly pedaled from San Francisco to Los Angeles while helping to raise $10.5 million for the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
Team organizer George Morales said, “Team Paul Mitchell Schools reflected the fact that AIDS does not discriminate and neither do we. Just as AIDS affects people of every age, race, and gender, our team included people with different religious beliefs, lifestyles, sexual orientations, and political affiliations. The makeup of our team broke the stereotypes of what AIDS is all about and showed the world that Paul Mitchell Schools really are ‘One Size Fits All.’”

Rhode Island Be Nice (Or Else!) Team Helps
Homeless Families
Eighteen Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School Rhode Island provided haircuts, manicures, and makeup for 60 homeless women at Crossroads Rhode Island, the largest homeless services organization in the state.
Members of the school’s Be Nice (Or Else!) Team brought shampoo and conditioner and gave gifts of Tea Tree lotions. “The happiness and smiles that these women experienced was truly a rewarding experience for all of our Future Professionals,” said Education Leader Annette Tutalo. “Doing events like this for the community and having our Future Professionals share their experience has made our Be Nice (Or Else!) group grow to almost one-half of our student body.”
School Director Veronica Rendina added, “The director of the shelter was so impressed with our Future Professionals because they did not judge or run away. They were ushering the families in and shouting for them to sit, smile, and have fun in traditional Paul Mitchell School fashion. They were most impressed by the humility and sheer sincerity of our kids.”

Being Coachable
From Connecting to My Future
It’s amazing how much you can absorb from a mentor, but no amount of mentoring will help if you aren’t open to coaching. Here are four great ways to make yourself more coachable:
- Listen. If someone is willing to give you their time, experience, and life history, listen with respect and treat the information like gold. Be open to a new approach, perspective, and ideas. Realize that your mentors have special knowledge and information. Not everything they share may apply to you; take what you can use and leave the rest.
- Put forth effort and focus. When given the opportunity to learn from mentors, be present and focus on learning what they have to offer. Show up early and stay late. Pay attention to everything your mentor does. Mentors are masters at what they do. By paying attention to the smallest details, you may learn a valuable tip that can save you time or help you make more money.
Seize the moment. Take full advantage of having a mentor in your classes by asking to assist. Offer to pack tools, sweep hair, or help with models. Be willing to fold towels, clean, and help in any way you can. Stay after class to ask questions. You can turn any class into a mini-mentoring session by seizing the moment as an opportunity to learn.
- Show appreciation. The best way to thank your mentors is to take what they give you and put it into action immediately. Follow up with handwritten thank-you notes (not e-mails, because they aren’t special enough) about your progress.

Seth Willis, Class of 2009 The Ohio Academy, Columbus A Paul Mitchell Partner School
Always an overachiever, Seth Willis graduated from high school at age 15 and started a business with his dad at age 21. Suddenly, he changed direction, living the next three years in what he describes as a selfish, destructive lifestyle. “I overdosed twice on drugs and was on a path that was sure to end my life,” Seth says.
At age 24, looking for a fresh start and a positive environment, Seth moved to Ohio. “My wife was having a hard time staying away from our previous lifestyle and I had to give her the ultimatum of starting a life with me or parting our ways,” he recalls. “The next morning, her things were packed and she had left. I didn’t know where she was for three months until I got a certified letter stating that she was filing for divorce. It was the lowest point in my life. Three days before starting school, I was contemplating taking my own life. But I focused on the positives and, with the support of my family, I decided to go after a lifestyle and career I could be proud of.”
Seth calls it the best decision he ever made. “At school, I have learned to love myself and adopt the heart of a servant,” he says. “I remember so clearly the day I knew I had found my calling. I showed up to school and was handed a client. She was a beautiful lady, eight and a half months pregnant, and had that amazing glow only they can possess. But her posture was all wrong, she wasn’t smiling, and she wouldn’t look me in the eyes. When I asked, ‘What can I do for you today?’ she started crying. She had a severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder and pulled big patches out of her hair. I gave her highlights and a hairstyle she could replicate at home so no one would have to know about her problem. By the end of the visit she was laughing, checking herself out in the mirror, and standing tall and proud of who she was. I felt so good about what I was able to do. Although she was already beautiful on the outside, she had felt unattractive and insecure but she left feeling beautiful and confident.”
Seth’s newfound attitude has earned him many opportunities. He has participated in Design Team, Phase Two, Caper and Beacon, and his video résumé was selected as the Video of the Month for the March 2009 Paul Mitchell Schools Newsletter. In 2008, he did hair and makeup for the launch of Project Runway contestant Kelli Martin’s clothing line, assisted Artistic Directors for Paul Mitchell Professional Hair Color Scott Cole and Linda Yodice at the Mid-American Beauty Classic, and won a hair show competition hosted by the Tobias Project, Inc. He was also selected to do the hair and makeup for his school’s new Web site photos.
“Through my experience, I have regained the respect and love of those close to me, and with what I put them through, that means the world to me,” Seth says. “I am happy with the things I’ve been able to accomplish, but I am most proud of the effort I have put toward getting these things. There is no reward greater than feeling like you have earned something, and I am proud to say I have earned everything I have gotten. Having the Paul Mitchell family behind me, I am fully confident in my success as a person and in the industry. They have supported me through my lonely times and reminded me that I have self-worth and something to offer. We are an army of beautiful, spirited people dedicated to making people’s days and setting an example by conducting our lives in an honorable way. I am living proof that dreams can come true, and people can change. Being selfless and loving myself has allowed me to have success. When you put people first, success will follow!”
“Seth is one of those people who refuses to fail. He has so much confidence and belief in himself, which, in this industry, is half the battle. His work ethic and commitment to excellence are the other half of his winning formula for success. I will not be at all surprised when I read about Seth in Vogue magazine. In fact, I expect it.”

Kazhal Luther, Class of 2004
Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa
Kazhal Luther began her career at a single-line Paul Mitchell distributorship in Austin, Texas. She quickly moved from customer service rep to educational team member to director of education. “The educational team was so contagious that I decided to go to beauty school,” she recalls. Kazhal enrolled in night classes at a local cosmetology school, started saving her money, and eventually moved to California where she worked days at Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa while attending night school classes. At the time, the Costa Mesa school had just opened, making it the second of two Paul Mitchell Schools.
Less than one year later, Kazhal graduated and became the first person officially hired by Paul Mitchell Advanced Education. Although her title was Advanced Academy Coordinator, she performed several roles in the growing young company. She also had opportunities to assist celebrity hairstylist Dean Banowetz on a Ryan Seacrest photo shoot and to work at hair shows with Paul Mitchell educators Lucie Doughty and George Morales. In her current role as Operations and Advanced Academy Leader, Kazhal plans all Paul Mitchell School trainings and events, including Advanced Academy, technical trainings, team trainings, school owner trainings, and school certifications; these events amount to nearly 2,000 days of professional education per year. “It’s been really cool to see the company grow from the beginning to where it is now,” she says.
Kazhal’s advice for Future Professionals:
- Just say yes. Any opportunity that came to me, I just said yes. The opportunities are endless.
- Tap into your resources, including the Learning Leaders and people who surround you. Everybody’s here for you; that’s why they’re here. They really care.
- Be a lifelong learner. Any knowledge you can gain is power for you to succeed. Once you graduate, take your continuing ed classes, keep your skills up, and always be open to learning. Seize every educational opportunity to stay current and advance yourself in your career.
- Follow your heart and your dreams. Don’t be afraid.

“At the end of the day, only a handful of Paul Mitchell graduates will reach a position like Kazhal’s. She told me and convinced me that she was the right person for this job, through her behavior, performance, and tenacity. And by the way, Kazhal is not a loud, life-of-the-party type of person; visionaries can sometimes be soft-spoken, quiet people whose passion gets the job done.”

Paul Mitchell Schools Celebrate Earth Day
Paul Mitchell Future Professionals stormed The Today Show plaza on April 21 to help raise national awareness and kick off their Earth Week activities. Future Professionals from Pulse Beauty Academy, the Lab, Academy NYC, Parisian Beauty Academy, and Cactus Academy Paul Mitchell Schools rose at the crack of dawn to dress up in tree costumes of their own design or Paul Mitchell “Cut Hair, Not Trees” T-shirts, hold up banners, and pass out Tea Tree foil samples to the crowd.
One of the “trees” spoke to Al Roker on-air and told him they were representing Paul Mitchell Schools to kick off Earth Week. Both Al Roker and Meredith Vieira received Paul Mitchell green T-shirts, and Matt Lauer was very interested in the weeklong green plans, which included a variety of eco-friendly activities such as recycling drives, community cleanups, and reducing carbon footprints in the school locations. In the “Cut Hair, Not Trees” campaign, participating schools donated the week’s hair clippings to Matter of Trust, an organization that weaves hair clippings into mats used for soaking up oil spills.

The activities received widespread coverage on national Web sites and blogs, regional publications, business journals, and broadcast outlets including Green Biz, Forbes, Reuters, Yahoo Finance, the Miami Herald, and many more. Look for great photos of the Future Professionals with Meredith Vieira and on Rockefeller Plaza in the upcoming Cut & Dry.
